13 Peeps
Veered way out there today. Pulling from some of the experimental stuff we did in the teacher training, we busted out the chairs. Class was not "good" but useful to practice some new things. Theme was cultivating a sense of Wonder by trying new things.

Jam Session 2, Sunday Afternoon
The Emotion of Wonder.
Wonder is the emotion that saved me last year. So today, my aim was to help cultivate a sense of wonder by offering a plan that I was not even sure about. If I am encouraging peeps to bust out and practice teaching new things, how else can they learn to do so unless I give an example of it.
Similar to the last day of the last session, we worked mostly with partners the whole time so that we were learning together, touching, talking and communicating. While working together to get that fact that every body is different and a smidge this way or that way makes a huge difference.
Another point was to remove the notion that there is one way to do anything to help remove the hesitation with trying new things. That if we approach the relationship openly and lovingly and with the intention to help, instead of teach, magic can happen. AR gave me a ride home after class and she confirmed that the experiment worked.
Impressing the Heart
There are at 16 Variations of using 2 blocks under the head and shoulders to open the heart and shoulders and many details wihtin those 16 variations.
We broke up into partners and played with 4 variations each (each choosing their variation), experimenting and learning. There were so many great observations, understandings and learnings.
R's Hamstring Attachment Injury
R shared about the hamstring injury he has had for about a year.
We played with a way of using the wall to help engage the back of the leg to protect the area as he stretched.
- Dandasana
- Revlving Head to Knee Pose
- M3 Variation
(Both Sides)
- Paschimottanasana
AR shared that this way of working was more painful for her, again showing that what works for one does not work for all.
I showed the method of placing a belt around the hamstring attachment and cinching it tight for protection.
And Chairs
Then we pulled out the chairs. So we were in new territory for almost everyone which meant none of us were in the know. This helped keep everyone in learning mode.
- Shoulder Opener with Brick on Chair
- Partner Scorpian with Chair
- Partner Dwi Viparitta Dandasana on Chair with Mat
- Bridge on the Chair
- Wheel on the Chair
Lots of learning here and some new experiences. Totally enjoyed myself and it seemed like most people were having fun and learning.
Probably too many backbends.
- Shoulderstand with chair and bolster.
(This was cool to show, but perhaps a forward fold would have been more calming)
- Waterfall (Again, this is relaxing, but already so much blood had been going to head, something even more restful would have been better perhaps).
Close.

Class at Krotona
Tonight I had the opportunity to work with the Theosophical Group here in Ojai at Krotona. Thank goodness Alana came to help me. Alana always makes things magic and it's so helpful to have a witness. Her feedback was, "Well that gives a whole new meaning to 'on the fly'."
I was nervous all day and a frog has been sitting in my throat for the last 2 days. I am so grateful for our relationship with Krotona that I really wanted it to go well. I called out to HPV Blavatsky, Annie Besant, Uma, Krishnamurti and Ravi Ravindra for assistance. Then as I drove there I gave it all up.
The meeting opens with a piano recital and then a silent meditation.
Then I was asked to start the yoga.
There were about 14 peeps on the floor and 4 peeps in their chairs.
Opening
Low Back Awareness
Breath Awareness
Apanasana (peeps in chairs could also do this)
Hamstring Stretch with Straps
Transition to Sides and Come to standing
Everyone got a chair
Standing forward fold on Chair

Sit and Close
I am learning not to judge or go over details of a class to much once it is over. I suppose it went well cuz they used words like "next time we'll mike you" and "we really want to get a class going here" so maybe that means I didn't blow it.

Jason Crandell Workshop: Day 1
Jason and Andrea arrived this evening from San Francisco.
Traffic had been horrible and they arrived minutes before he was supposed to teach.
Like a total pro, he arrived and dropped in instantly.
Jason remembers people's names. He immediately acknowledges the space that is Lulu Bandha's and he starts right in. Allowing your body to do the teaching more than him.
I am sharing the sequence from memory, so I might miss a few spots. I filmed a bunch of it and tomorrow we will be recording the entire class.
Opening
Lay over 2 blocks or bolster in a supported backbend.
(he drew attention to the backs usual pattern of resting, and encouraged us to relax into it.)
Seated Posture Sequence
Simple Shin to Shin Cross Legged Forward Fold
Side Bend
(Adjectives like Gluey)
Backwards Press
(Really great instruction on bending the elbows, allowing chest to open and then pressing up.)
Switch Legs and Repeat
Dandasana Legs with backwards press
(prep for back bending starting here. Also drew our awareness to the action of rolling thighs open and reaching thru balls of feet)
Cow Fae Legs with Forward Fold
Easy Half Lord of the Fishes Pose with Armpit Wrap

Repeat Other side

Uppavishta Konasana
Side Stretch with UK Legs

Handstand Play
Jason has a really great way of knowing how to divide a group.
He asks people who are not comfortable with handstand to set up in one corner and the people who are to set up in rest of room. Then he demonstrates for the "handstand" people. Then he works with the "non-handstand" peeps.
Tonight, he emphasized the play of drawing the chin into chest and then realising it. (See Video)
With the non handstand peeps, he emphasized playing with getting comfortable with kicking up.
He allowed about 3 minutes for play.
Tree Pose with foot on block and toes hanging over the block.
To emphasize that balance is "responsiveness, not rigidity".
Very cool way of teaching the non balance and balance.
Then when he took us back to handstand, he emphasized the "Rooster fingers".
One more tree pose with "handstand arms".
Standing Pose Sequence
All of us faced in one direction with feet wide on the mat.
(My memory is a little fuzzy here, so I might not record it accurately)

Supported Back bend with rolled mat along spine

Urdhva Dhanurasana with Chair under feet

He did so much and yet I never felt rushed or overwhelmed.
I drove home at 35 miles an hour so I know I was relaxed.
