Lulu Bandha's Summer Yoga Camp Day 6

Tuesday, June 11

1. Centering
Choice of Heart Opener
(Showed Block or Ball behind Heart, head supported)
Spinal Twist
Happy Baby
Savasana

(encouraged them to instruct themselves through this)

2. Tools of Teaching
This talk was a bit spontaneous. Shared the need to have recording devices around you like notepads or digital recorders. Shared the "Spontaneity Takes Planning" and this lead in different directions but covered a lot of stuff that I feel is important

3. Asana Breakdown Homework Review
Everyone seemed pretty comfortable and at ease with the Homework and the concept.

4. Teaching Creative Sun Salutations
This might be the last time we do this. It is too much to ask of the peeps to go though each other's sun salutations. It is exhausting and gruelling. This cannot be a part of the training going forward. So useful to hear every one's voices and know what they are working on but this is what the practicum is for. Everyone was WIPED and this is why.

5. Block Play to understand elements of Backbending
The intention had been to get some elements understood so that we could go into a baby backbend practice. WE ended up looking at pictures of the spine and talking a bit about disc herniation and injuries. This killed any chance of continuing practice. So we unwound and took a break.

6. Break

7. The Sound of OM
Barbara yesterday said she did not undetstand the sound of OM. So I preparred a lecture, but we only had 15 minutes so we reviewed the MEANING, the A, U and M, and played with several techniques for playing with it.

Close.

Lulu Bandha's Summer Yoga Camp Day 5

Monday, June 11
Partner Breath Work

1. 4 Part Breathing Exercise
Partner 1 lies down on ground and gets super comfortable and cozy. Partner 2 brings her hands to partner's belly, side ribs, upper chest and neck for 2 to 3 minute intervals to give Partner 1 something to breath into. I timed it and lead it.

Went really well.

2. Breaking down an Asana
Looked at Urdhva Dhanurasana and talked about how to understand a pose.
Assigned Asana Breakdown Homework.

3. Headstand practice
I shared the important aspects of preparing a student for headstand.
Then we moved though a Yoga Basics Sequence towards it.
Then we looked a each other's headstands and practiced assisting each other.

4. Om Circle Close
This revealed that we need to talk about OM.

Summary: The breathwork went great. Allowed peeps to start to form more intimate trusting relationships and develop an understanding for the anatomy of the breathing. The Asana Breakdown went smoothly and I think made sense. The headstand practice was clear and looking and assisting each other was super fun. Out of 9 peeps, only 2 were comfortable doing headstand in the center of the room so there was a lot of opportunity for growth and discovery.

Lulu Bandha's Summer Yoga Camp Day 4

Sunday, June 10
12:30 to 4:20pm

1. Opening
We began today with partner assisted hip opening @ wall. Uppavista Konasana and Baddha Konasana. Getting used to interacting with people's bodies, communicating and feeling.

2. Discussion
We talked about Sanskrit, the Myth of the Pose and looked at the roots of the Vinyasa Practice.

Short 20 minute Break

3. Sun Salutations
We looked at the elements of the Classic A, B, and C. The postures and how to modify and teach. I shared a Lunge Salute Salutation pattern. Assigned homework: to design a unique salutation.

4. Teaching Standing Poses
Homework last night had been to prepare to teach a pose, so chose a few peeps today to lead poses.
Cathy: Trikonasana
Molly: Ardha Chandrasana
Gennifer: Parsvotanasana
Alain: Standing Splits

5. Janu Sirsasana
Looked at pose and talked about some of the elements.
PLayed with several assits and adjustments on each other.

6. Restorative

Close.

Summary: Felt good to go straight through today without too long a break. Fun to start to hear each other's voices. Uncertain of the teaching of the classical sun salutations to explain what we are deviating from, but seemed to work today. However, feels like I am wearing someone elses shoes, cuz I am not taking the time to teach how I teach and allowing peeps to fly around a little. But the group is so supportive and loving, nothing that bad could really happen.

Lulu Bandha's Summer Yoga Camp Day 3

June 9, Saturday
12:30 to 4:30pm

I had huge ambitions today. My plan was way bigger then what actually happened, but I think it worked out. I wanted to get the Nervous System talk in so that everyone was starting to understand the importance of the Breath. I wanted peeps to start teaching half sun salutation's and I wanted to start to look at Standing Postures and possibly start to practice assisting.

1) Centering
a) Supine Hip Neutralizer Pose with awareness of Exhale
b) Supported Heart Opener on 2 Blocks
c) Sit

2) Nervous System Talk
My goal was to communicate that one of the big ideas of Yoga is to unravel these old Sympathetic Nervous System Wires and evolve as a human species. I brought in the Frans De Waal research, the Vagus Nerve, the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic Nervous Systems, General Theory of Love and the kitchen Sink. A bit rambling, but I feel that there is a more suspecting thread in there for me to find. The point got made and I think understood.

3) Half Sun Salutations
We practiced teaching Half Sun Salutations
Molly, Robert, Alain, Alana and Gennifer

4) Standing Pose Sequence
I led them through a 2 flows of Standing Poses
Warrior 2, Reverse Triangle, Triangle (both sides and Wide Leg Forward Fold)
Warrior 2, Reverse Triangle, Triangle, and Side Angle Pose to Hip Opener to Twisting Lunge to Uttanasana to Standing

We then gathered to look at postures.
We looked at Warrior 2 first. Looking at different people in the posture and understanding the various elements and how to adjust the posture to be more appropriate for each person's body. Even got a little into practicing communicating about the feeling.

We also looked at Triangle and different ways to see it.

So that there was enough unwind time and the break would be effective, we switched gears and did Paschimotanasana assistance and Lying Spinal Twist Adjustments.

Savasana

Break

4:20 We came back together and briefly assigned the homework: To write out instructions for your least and most favorite standing asanas.

Close

Summary: I am thrilled that the group is speaking up and sharing what is going on for them and also sharing how they do it. Robert is so awesome cuz he brings a different take on being a yoga teacher as a guy and has figured out different ways of doing things that work really well. Alain has a lot of great information and I hope he shares more. He has started to really become a coach for the other peeps. And how cool that we all copied Molly's Warrior 2 today. The main flavor of the group has not yet been revealed and so it does not yet have it's own stride but I feel like it will soon.

Discussion
Looked at anatomical pictures of the Pelvis and discussed the different parts and how to use them or not in instructions.
Presented idea of Anatomy of Breath
Used Downward Facing Dog to start to look at different bodies
Played with assisting Each Other in the Dog Pose

Summary:
Only one person in the group takes my classes regularly. So I am not able to rely on the student's experience with me as teacher. This is guiding me to try to be more explicitly and clear with what I am doing and why. It will mean that we have more practice time than I am used to needing to schedule in and it will also force me to mostly share from my own heart.

I chose to do the SWG practice as a way to start to get clear on the languaging that I am using for the postures and why. I realize in explaining that one of the guiding principles for me as a teacher is to allow the student to be responsible for what is going on in themselves. To continually try to teach the skills of yoga, the awareness, the play the discernment.
